Artificial Gaze, 2021

Technology SuperCycle

Oil on canvas – 40 x 70 cm | 15.7 x 27.5 inches

This close-up portrait depicts a young man resting his head on his hand, gazing directly toward the viewer. At first glance, his expression seems fully human—subtle, aloof, introspective. Yet upon closer inspection, one eye reveals a robotic mechanism beneath the surface.

“Artificial Gaze” explores the growing difficulty of discerning between the organic and the synthetic. It reflects an era in which the boundary between human and machine is blurring—not only in function, but in appearance, emotion, and identity.

With this painting, Eva Prada raises questions about authenticity, recognition, and trust in the face of evolving technologies. Can we still rely on perception as a measure of humanity? Or are we now staring back at ourselves through artificial eyes?
