Artificial Gaze: Exploring the Blurred Line Between Real and Synthetic
In recent weeks, advancements in AI have pushed the boundaries of what we consider "human" even further. From the development of a humanoid robot capable of walking, grabbing, and running as described in Science Robotics, to an AI that can compose music based on the sound of someone sobbing (Futurism), the distinctions between organic and synthetic are increasingly blurry. We’re now even seeing new forms of life that defy the traditional understanding of death, as discussed in this recent study.
This evolving dialogue around AI and our humanity is what inspired my latest painting, "Artificial Gaze" (still in progress). The portrait captures what seems to be a young man with a subtle, aloof expression. Upon closer inspection, his second eye appears mechanical, leaving viewers to question the true nature of the subject. His skeptical gaze reflects our own doubts about discerning the real from the imagined, the organic from the synthetic.
